Apple has increased the price of the iPhone 17 in India by Rs 17,000 soon after unveiling its latest iPhone 18 Pro series and the new foldable iPhone Duo. The sharp revision comes at a time when buyers typically expect older iPhone models to become more affordable after a new generation arrives.
The iPhone 17, which was launched in India at Rs 82,900 for the 256GB storage version, is now listed at Rs 99,900. The 512GB variant has been priced at Rs 1,24,900. The revised price places Apple’s regular iPhone model just Rs 100 below the Rs 1 lakh mark, making it significantly more expensive for customers looking for a non-Pro iPhone.
Unlike previous launch cycles, Apple did not unveil a standard iPhone 18 model. As a result, the iPhone 17 continues as the newest regular iPhone in the company’s Indian lineup. The move also signals Apple’s stronger push towards premium smartphone pricing, especially after the launch of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The company has reportedly raised prices of other existing iPhone models as well. The iPhone 17e has seen its price rise from Rs 64,900 to Rs 79,900, marking an increase of Rs 15,000. The iPhone 16 is now priced at Rs 89,900. Meanwhile, the iPhone Air has recorded the steepest increase, with its price jumping by Rs 30,000 from Rs 1,19,900 to Rs 1,49,900.
The price hike is being linked to rising global costs of memory and RAM components. Demand for high-capacity memory has increased due to the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence services, data centres and AI-focused companies. This has reportedly put pressure on global component suppliers and raised manufacturing costs across the smartphone industry.
Apple has also discontinued the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max following the introduction of the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. However, the older Pro models may remain available through third-party retailers until existing stock is exhausted.
Despite the higher price, the iPhone 17’s hardware remains unchanged. It features a 6.3-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, Always-On Display support, peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits and Ceramic Shield 2 protection. The phone runs on Apple’s A19 chip and offers a 48-megapixel main camera, a 48-megapixel ultra-wide camera and an 18-megapixel front camera with Center Stage support.
Apple claims that the iPhone 17 can deliver up to 30 hours of video playback, which is up to eight hours more than the iPhone 16. However, the new pricing could make potential buyers reconsider whether the standard iPhone still offers the value it did at launch.
