Three-time U.S. Olympian David Hearn has been charged in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia for “maliciously” damaging lining at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The destruction was willful and extensive, authorities say, and has led to criminal accusations that may include penalties and incarceration if convicted.
The indictment comes following an investigation by park police and federal partners, after maintenance workers found ripping and other damage to the pool’s protective liner. Hearn, who has represented the United States at numerous Olympic Games, has not spoken publicly.
Court filings indicate that prosecutors will provide evidence in subsequent sessions. The matter has attracted rapid public attention due to Hearn’s high profile and the national significance of the memorial.
