China Draws 4 “Red Lines” Ahead Of Trump Visit

As U.S President Donald Trump prepares for his two-day visit to China, Beijing has laid down “four red lines” that must not be challenged during his much-anticipated meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The Chinese Embassy in the U.S shared a post on X, listing the four areas that must not be debated. The post was titled “The four red lines in China-US relations must not be challenged” and was followed by a graphic mentioning the topics that were not up for negotiations. The list included The Taiwan Question, Democracy and Human Rights, Paths and Political Systems, and China’s Development Right.

The embassy also shared another post on the platform, stating, “China and the US should explore the building of a strategic, constructive, and stable China-US relationship. Mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation remain the right way for China and the US to get along.”

President X had first announced the red lines in a statement after a meeting with former American President Joe Biden in November 2024.

The Taiwan Question

While the United States has not officially made a statement on where it stands with Taiwan’s sovereignity, it has acknowledged, without accepting, that the island comes under Chinese authority. However, Washington is required by law to provide Taiwan with the tools to defend itself. The Trump administration had approved a weapons package of $11 billion to Taiwan in December last year.

Beijing opposed the move, asserting that Taiwan is an internal issue and a matter for the Chinese people.

Zhang Han, a spokesperson for China’s Taiwan Affairs office, said in the capital, “We firmly oppose the United States engaging in any form of military ties with China’s Taiwan region and firmly oppose the United States selling weapons to China’s Taiwan region. This position is consistent and unequivocal.”

Besides the Taiwan matter, China has also been a strong critic of the United States’ intervention in its internal affairs under the excuse of democracy and human rights concerns.
