A sensational case from Rajasthan’s Kota has triggered intense political debate, social media outrage, and widespread speculation after a local man was arrested over allegations involving fake identity, online exploitation, religious conversion, and an alleged cross-border conspiracy.
Dubbed the “Kota Story” by some local groups and media outlets, the controversy revolves around “Manish Sharma”, a resident of Vigyan Nagar, whose arrest has become the center of two sharply different narratives. On one side are explosive allegations made by a Bajrang Dal activist claiming an organized network targeting Hindu women. On the other are the official findings of the Rajasthan Police, who say several of the most sensational claims remain unverified.
As digital forensic experts continue examining the seized devices, the investigation remains ongoing, with authorities urging people not to jump to conclusions before the probe is complete.
How the Case Began
The controversy formally began on June 15, 2026, when Yogesh Renwal, a Bajrang Dal activist, lodged a complaint at the Vigyan Nagar Police Station in Kota. Acting on the complaint, police registered an FIR against Manish Sharma under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act.
The FIR includes sections related to promoting religious enmity, deliberately hurting religious sentiments, provoking breach of peace, and transmitting obscene or sexually explicit material electronically. Following the registration of the case, Sharma was arrested and later sent to judicial custody. His mobile phone, storage devices, and digital communication records have since been seized for forensic examination.
The Explosive Allegations
The complaint filed by the Bajrang Dal paints the case as much larger than a cybercrime investigation. According to the complainant, Sharma allegedly operated online under the fake identity “Moin Khan”, using platforms such as Telegram, Snapchat, and Discord to conceal his real identity while interacting with Hindu women.
One of the biggest allegations is that investigators recovered more than 40,000 obscene videos from his mobile phone. The complainant further claimed that some of these videos contained derogatory references to Hindu religious symbols, including the sacred “Om” and “Swastik,” alongside objectionable material involving Hindu deities and the Shivling. The complaint also alleges that Sharma had formally converted to Islam, claiming he underwent circumcision and adopted Islamic practices before allegedly carrying out his online activities.
Perhaps the most sensational accusation was the alleged “Pakistan connection”. According to the complaint, certain audio recordings and chats suggested that individuals based in Pakistan were directing online operations targeting women in India.
Based on these allegations, Bajrang Dal representatives approached the Rajasthan Chief Minister, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Prime Minister’s Office, demanding an investigation by central agencies.
What the Rajasthan Police Say
As the allegations rapidly spread across social media, senior officers of the Kota City Police publicly clarified that the investigation had so far failed to support many of the major claims being circulated.
Additional Superintendent of Police Subhash Mishra stated that investigators have not found any evidence supporting allegations of religious conversion or an organized conversion racket. Police also said that the initial examination of the recovered digital material did not reveal content intentionally insulting Hindu deities in the manner alleged by the complainant.
Investigating Officer Mangilal explained that Sharma appeared to be highly active in multiple Telegram groups while using the alias “Moin Khan.” However, based on the evidence collected so far, investigators believe he was largely downloading and storing explicit adult content available within these online groups rather than operating a sophisticated entrapment network.
Authorities have also categorically stated that they have found no verified evidence linking Sharma to any Pakistan-based handlers, organized cross-border network, or foreign financial transactions.
Similarly, police said claims regarding Sharma’s alleged religious conversion and circumcision have not been substantiated during the investigation.
Digital Forensics Now Hold the Key
The investigation has now entered a technically intensive phase. Cyber experts are examining Sharma’s mobile phones, storage devices, Telegram groups, Discord accounts, Snapchat history, and other digital records to reconstruct his online activities.
Investigators are attempting to determine whether he merely downloaded explicit content from existing online groups or actively deceived, manipulated, or exploited individual women through fake identities.
The forensic analysis will also establish whether any victims were directly targeted or whether the recovered material was simply accumulated from internet sources. Officials have emphasized that only the digital evidence will determine the scope of criminal liability.
A Case That Highlights the Power and Danger of Viral Narratives
The Kota case has once again highlighted how quickly allegations shared online can evolve into nationwide controversies before investigations reach definitive conclusions. While the complainant has described the matter as a large-scale conspiracy involving identity fraud, religious conversion, and international links, the Rajasthan Police insist that such claims must be backed by verifiable evidence.
At present, investigators say the evidence primarily points toward alleged violations under the Information Technology Act and related public order provisions, with several of the more dramatic accusations still lacking factual support.
Investigation Continues
With Manish Sharma remaining in judicial custody, forensic experts continue to analyze thousands of digital files recovered during the investigation. Authorities have not ruled out adding further charges if fresh evidence emerges, but they have also stressed that conclusions will be based solely on verified digital findings rather than public speculation.
Until the forensic examination is completed, the “Kota Story” remains a developing investigation—one marked by serious allegations, conflicting narratives, and an official probe that is still far from over.
