Vijay’s Son Jason Sanjay Reveals Why He Rejected Acting Debut, Chose Direction Instead for Lyca’s Sigma

While many star kids dream of making a grand acting debut, Jason Sanjay, the son of Tamil superstar and politician Vijay, has chosen a different path. Instead of stepping in front of the camera, the young filmmaker is preparing to make his mark behind it with his directorial debut, Sigma. In a recent interview, Jason opened up about why he turned down an acting opportunity and how his passion for storytelling eventually led him to filmmaking.

Jason revealed that he was once approached by acclaimed filmmaker Alphonse Puthren, best known for directing the blockbuster Premam. At the time, Jason was around 20 years old and still pursuing his education. Although receiving an offer from such a celebrated director would have been a dream for many aspiring actors, Jason politely declined.

Explaining his decision, Jason said he did not consider himself ready to commit to acting. He believed it would be unfair to hear a script from a filmmaker he admired if he had no intention of accepting the project. Rather than making an impulsive decision, he chose to focus on completing his studies before deciding on a career in cinema.

As time passed, Jason realized that his true interest wasn’t acting but filmmaking. He shared that whenever he watches a movie, he naturally pays attention to the storytelling process rather than the performances alone. He enjoys analyzing where a story begins, how scenes unfold, and the techniques directors use to keep audiences engaged.

According to Jason, understanding the craft of storytelling feels like solving a puzzle. That fascination ultimately inspired him to study filmmaking in Canada, where he received formal training and gained hands-on experience behind the camera.

During his time abroad, Jason challenged himself creatively by writing a detailed 120-page screenplay. Instead of immediately trying to turn it into a feature film, he condensed the story into a 20-minute short film. The project served as a personal exercise to test his skills as a writer and director rather than a stepping stone to impress producers.

After returning to India, Jason continued refining his ideas and discussing them with friends and industry professionals. His persistence eventually paid off when his uncle, actor Sanjeev, introduced him to producer Tamil Kumaran. Following several discussions and script sessions, Jason successfully pitched his project, leading to his directorial debut Sigma under the prestigious Lyca Productions banner.

Despite belonging to one of South India’s biggest film families, Jason emphasized that support from his loved ones gave him the confidence to pursue his own dream. His parents, Vijay and Sangeetha, along with his sister and close friends, encouraged him throughout the process. He also received good wishes from popular actors Vijay Sethupathi and Soori before beginning the project.

Jason Sanjay’s journey stands out because he chose patience, education and creative preparation over an instant acting launch. Rather than relying solely on his father’s enormous stardom, he has focused on developing his own identity as a filmmaker. With Sigma set to mark his directorial debut, audiences will now be eager to see whether the young director can carve out a successful career on his own terms.
