As West Bengal enters the counting phase of its 2026 Assembly election, one question is dominating political conversations: who will be the next Chief Minister of the state? For the BJP, which is hoping to finally break the Trinamool Congress’ stronghold, the issue is no longer just about winning seats. It is also about deciding which leader would be most acceptable as the face of a possible new government.

Among the names being discussed, Suvendu Adhikari appears to be the strongest contender in public perception. A former TMC heavyweight turned BJP leader, he has built his image as the party’s most visible and aggressive challenger to Mamata Banerjee. His victory over Banerjee in Nandigram in 2021 made him a household name in Bengal politics, and many in the party see him as the natural front-runner if the BJP secures power.

However, the BJP has formally avoided announcing a chief ministerial face before the election, and senior leaders have repeatedly said the party will decide after the results. That has kept the field open for other names as well.

Dilip Ghosh, a veteran organiser and former state president, remains a respected old guard figure.

Sukanta Majumdar, who led the state unit and also serves in the Union government, is seen as a disciplined and nationally aligned leader.

Samik Bhattacharya, the current state president, has emerged as a quieter but potentially unifying face within the organisation.

Agnimitra Paul, known for her outspoken style, has also gained attention as a prominent female BJP voice in Bengal.

The real answer may depend on two things: the final seat tally and the BJP’s internal balance after the results. If the party performs strongly, Suvendu Adhikari is likely to remain the most visible choice. But if the leadership wants a surprise, a compromise or consensus candidate could emerge from within the state unit. For now, the race for the next chief minister of West Bengal remains open, and that uncertainty itself has become part of Bengal’s post-poll drama.
