Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi spoke to reporters at the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting in New Delhi on Thursday, stating that the Strait of Hormuz is open to all commercial vessels, provided that they coordinate with Tehran’s naval forces. He also asked fellow BRICS members to condemn “illegal aggression” by the United States and Israel against Iran.

Around 20% of the world’s oil and gas supply passed through the Strait of Hormuz before the joint U.S-Israel operation against Iran on February 28. In retaliation, Iran enforced a blockade on the maritime passage, leading to a global energy crisis. While Araghchi’s statements provide some relief to the markets, Iran continues to maintain the upper hand by imposing the condition of mandatory coordination with its naval forces to pass through the strait.

Iran International English took to X on Thursday, sharing that Araghchi pushed for the BRICS nations to take an official stand against the United States and Israel, describing their actions as violations of international law.

“Iran calls on BRICS member states and all responsible members of the international community to explicitly condemn violations of international law by the United States and Israel, including their illegal aggression against Iran,” Araghchi said in his address to the BRICS gathering.

Chair of the BRICS Summit, India, has long maintained a diplomatic stand on the ongoing conflict, advocating for dialogue and de-escalation while declining to place blame on either side. Experts correlate the nation’s neutral stance to its efforts to maintain active channels with Tehran, Washington, and Tel Aviv at the same time.

The conflict in West Asia, now in its third month, has been a topic of discussion in many international forums in 2026. It is also expected to be a central talking point in U.S President Donald Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.
