An Ukrainian drone strike on Moscow and its surrounding regions killed four people, including an Indian worker, according to the Indian embassy in Russia on Sunday.
The embassy released a statement, “One Indian worker has lost his life and three others have been injured in a drone attack in Moscow region earlier today.”
The statement also added that the embassy officials visited the site of the attack and met the injured workers in the hospital.
Local authorities reported that it was one of Ukraine’s biggest drone strikes, causing debris to fall on Russia’s largest airport without causing damage or affecting flights.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed and justified the attack, implying a retaliation against the recent Russian attacks on Kyiv. Ukrainian air force had reported that Russia launched an overnight attack with 287 drones on Sunday, 279 of which were shot down or jammed. According to Ukraine’s state emergency service, the strikes injured 8 people in the central Dnipropetrovsk region.
“Our responses to Russia’s prolongation of the war and attacks on our cities and communities are entirely justified,” said Zelenskyy “This time, Ukrainian long-distance sanctions have reached the Moscow region, and we are clearly telling the Russians: their state must end its war.”
Moscow Governor Andrei Vorobyev reported the other fatalities in the Ukrainian strike, including a woman, whose home was hit in Khimki, and two men in the Pokorelki village. Vorobyev posted on social media that the drones also damaged unspecified “infrastructure” and high-rise buildings.
City mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that at least 12 people were injured in the strike, mainly near the entrance to Moscow’s oil refinery. He assured that the “technology” of the refinery hadn’t been damaged.
According to state agency Tass, quoting Sobyanin, Russian forces intercepted 81 drones headed to the capital, marking one of the largest attacks on Moscow since Russia’s invasion on Ukraine began on February 24, 2022.
