India’s peak power demand surged to a new all-time high for the third consecutive day on May 20, 2026, driven by an intense heatwave and increased use of cooling appliances across the country. According to the Ministry of Power, the national peak electricity demand touched 265.44 gigawatts (GW) at 3:45 PM, surpassing the previous record of 260.45 GW recorded a day earlier.

India Power Demand Hits Record High

The rise in electricity consumption highlights the growing pressure on India’s power infrastructure during extreme summer conditions. The government confirmed that despite the surge, the demand was successfully met without any disruption, indicating improved grid management and supply readiness.

Three Consecutive Days of Record Demand

India has witnessed a sharp spike in electricity demand over the past three days:

  • May 18, 2026: 257.37 GW

  • May 19, 2026: 260.45 GW

  • May 20, 2026: 265.44 GW

This comes after the earlier peak of 256.1 GW recorded on April 25, 2026, which has now been exceeded multiple times within days.

Heatwave Drives Electricity Consumption

Officials attribute the surge primarily to extreme heat conditions across north and central India. With temperatures crossing 45°C in several regions, the usage of air conditioners, coolers, and fans has increased significantly.

For example, in major cities like Delhi, Jaipur, and Lucknow, continuous use of cooling appliances during peak afternoon hours has sharply pushed electricity demand to new highs.

Power Demand May Touch 270 GW

The Ministry of Power has projected that India’s peak electricity demand could reach 270 GW during the ongoing summer season. Given the current trend, this target may be achieved sooner than expected.

IMD Issues Heatwave Warning

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heatwave conditions will persist across several regions:

  • Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Delhi until May 24

  • Severe heatwave conditions likely in parts of Uttar Pradesh

These weather conditions are expected to further increase electricity consumption in the coming days.

Delhi Power Demand Peaks

In the national capital, Delhi’s peak power demand reached 7,776 megawatts (MW) on May 19, marking the highest level recorded so far this summer. Experts believe the figure may rise further if temperatures continue to soar.
