The U.S Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent confirmed on Thursday that preparations were under way to print a new $250 banknote featuring President Donald Trump’s face. Lawmakers will decide whether the notes will be put into circulation.

The United States legislation bans any living person from appearing on the currency but a proposal was introduced last year to create an exception for current and former presidents to be featured.

Bessent said a design had been prepared in anticipation for the amendment of the law.

He said at the White House, “Right now, there is a proposed legislation – front of the House, in front of the Senate – to change the first requirement so that a living person, Donald J Trump, could be on a $250 bill.”

The Washington Post had previously reported that Treasurer Brandon Beach, who was appointed by Trump, was pushing the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to accelerate the process for a new currency note to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Bessent told reporters, “I don’t think that there’s anything untoward about having the president of the United States, on the 250th anniversary bill.”

The Washington Post obtained a mock-up design of the note which showed the words “America 250 anniversary”, marking the independece of the United States on July 4, 1776.

Trump has been expanding his personal brand in his official capacity since returning to the office for his second term in January 2025.

The Department of Justice and other federal buildings currently display banners featuring his portrait.

Moreover, officials, who were appointed by Trump, of the Kennedy Center governing board added his name to the national performing arts facility, which was originally a memorial to late President John F Kennedy.

Trump’s signature is also expected to appear on U.S currency to commemorate the 250th anniversay. the first for an incumbent president.
