The sound of gunshots outside his Canadian home turned an ordinary night into a horrible experience for Punjabi singer and actor Gippy Grewal. Speaking platonically on Shekhar Suman’s talk show, Shekhar Tonite, Grewal opened up about the shocking 2023 firing incident and revealed how a misunderstanding about his relationship with Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has put him in trouble.
In November 2023, shots were fired outside Grewal’s residence in White Rock, Canada. The actor stated that the attack left him stunned as he had never received any extortion calls, threats, or warnings before.
After the incident, jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi claimed responsibility for the attack through a social media post. The gangster alleged that the firing was a “warning” and linked it to Grewal’s assumed friendship with Salman Khan, who has long been on the Bishnoi gang’s radar.
However, Grewal made it clear that he never shared a close bond with Salman Khan.
“The reality is that I had only met Salman sir a few times while promoting films on Bigg Boss and during a trailer launch. We didn’t even have a close friendship. But they assumed we were very close, which wasn’t true, and sadly, that misunderstanding led to the incident,” he said.
The actor further explained that Salman Khan’s presence at the trailer launch of his Punjabi film, Maujaan Hi Maujaan, was simply because the film’s producer had invited him as a professional courtesy and support for the project not because of any deep personal connection.
While the Bishnoi gang publicly cited the Salman Khan connection as the reason behind the attack, security agencies have suggested that such incidents involving Punjabi artists in Canada are often linked to larger cross-border extortion networks, where celebrity associations are sometimes used to attract attention and send a message.
By sharing his side of the story, Grewal not only spoke about the one of the most frightening moments of his life but also attempted to clear the misperception surrounding his relationship with Salman Khan.
