Nearly 20 years after Jab We Met released, Geet remains one of Bollywood’s most beloved characters. Played to perfection by Kareena Kapoor, the bubbly, outspoken and unapologetically honest young woman became an icon of modern Hindi cinema. Her dialogues are still quoted, her personality is still celebrated, and every few years, fans wonder if Bollywood will ever create another character quite like her.
Now, actress Anjana Sukhani has sparked fresh excitement by revealing that her character in Imtiaz Ali’s upcoming film Main Vaapas Aaunga carries shades of the unforgettable Geet.
In a recent interview, Anjana opened up about playing Meher, describing her as a woman who says exactly what’s on her mind without worrying about the consequences. According to the actress, Meher possesses the same no-filter energy that made Geet such an endearing and relatable character.
“Like Geet, Meher also speaks her mind without hesitation,” Anjana shared. She explained that one of Imtiaz Ali’s greatest strengths as a filmmaker is his ability to write women who are both incredibly intelligent and wonderfully innocent at the same time.
What makes Meher particularly special, according to Anjana, is her terrible sense of timing. She often blurts out things at the most inappropriate moments, saying exactly what she shouldn’t say and when she shouldn’t say it. Ironically, it is this very flaw that makes her feel authentic and lovable.
For Anjana, becoming part of an Imtiaz Ali film was a dream opportunity. Recalling how she landed the role, the actress revealed that the journey began with a simple request for an introductory video. When she eventually met the filmmaker, she felt an instant connection.
“He probably saw Meher in me,” she reflected.
The actress admitted that once Imtiaz narrated the character and the story’s emotional world, there was never a question of turning the project down. “Who was I to say no to Imtiaz Ali?” she said with humility.
Beyond the excitement of playing Meher, Anjana described the filming process as an unforgettable learning experience, especially because of her co-star Naseeruddin Shah. She revealed that watching the veteran actor perform on set was deeply emotional and sometimes even brought tears to her eyes. She also praised Diljit Dosanjh, calling him an exceptionally sincere and dedicated actor.
Featuring a stellar ensemble cast that includes Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina and Sharvari Wagh, Main Vaapas Aaunga is already generating significant curiosity. And if Anjana’s words are anything to go by, Meher could very well become this generation’s new favourite free-spirited, endlessly quotable Imtiaz Ali heroine.
