Tamil superstar turned politician Vijay’s much-awaited film ‘Jana Nayagan’ has finally crossed one of its biggest hurdles. After months of legal battles, internal certification disputes, and repeated delays, the film has now received an ‘A’ certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), subject to a few cuts.

The certification marks a significant milestone for the H. Vinoth directorial, bringing the ambitious project one step closer to its theatrical release. According to reports, the detailed list of edits is expected to be uploaded soon, while the final censor certificate is likely to be issued next week. With the certification process nearing completion, the makers are now targeting a theatrical release in the last week of July, with July 24 or July 31 emerging as the most likely release dates.

A Long Road To Certification

The film’s journey to the censor board has been far from smooth. Back in December 2025, Jana Nayagan was initially cleared by the CBFC’s Examining Committee with a U/A 16+ rating after suggesting a few minor modifications. The film was originally scheduled to hit theatres on January 9, 2026.

However, the process took an unexpected turn when one of the members of the same Examining Committee reportedly raised objections after the initial clearance. The matter was escalated to CBFC chairperson Prasoon Joshi, who decided to halt the certification process and refer the film to the Revising Committee. Unhappy with the sudden reversal, the producers approached the Madras High Court and later the Supreme Court, challenging the delay in issuing the certificate despite the initial approval. The prolonged legal battle pushed the film’s release by several months.

Vijay’s Political Journey Added A New Dimension

The delay became even more significant as Vijay’s political career took a dramatic turn during the same period. Since the actor is now serving as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jana Nayagan has gained even greater public and political attention. Adding to the delay, the certification process was also affected by the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct during the election period.

Producer Venkat K. Narayana recently revealed that many fans have requested the film’s opening title card to identify Vijay as the “Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu” instead of his long-time screen title “Thalapathy Vijay.” While no official decision has been announced, the producer acknowledged the symbolic connection between Vijay’s new political role and the film’s title, which translates to “People’s Leader.”

What Does The ‘A’ Certificate Mean?

Receiving an ‘A’ certificate suggests that Jana Nayagan features mature themes, intense action sequences, or political content that the CBFC considers suitable only for adult audiences. Directed by H. Vinoth, who is known for making gritty action dramas, the certification aligns with expectations surrounding the film’s tone and storytelling.

The project also made headlines recently after portions of the film were allegedly leaked online before release. The incident prompted a police investigation, leading to multiple arrests, highlighting the immense anticipation surrounding the movie.

All Eyes On July

With the certification issue finally nearing resolution, Jana Nayagan appears to be entering the final stage before release. Unless any last-minute distribution or logistical hurdles emerge, Vijay’s first major film after becoming Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister is expected to arrive in theatres by the end of July. Given the huge fan following, political significance, and months of anticipation, Jana Nayagan is shaping up to be one of the biggest Tamil releases of the year.
