Legendary Singer Asha Bhosle, 93, Hospitalised After Cardiac Arrest in Mumbai

Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, aged 93, suffered a cardiac arrest on Saturday, 11 April, and has been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai for emergency treatment. According to reports, she is being cared for in the hospital’s Emergency Medical Services unit, with a medical team monitoring her condition closely.

Doctor Pratit Samdani, one of the physicians looking after her, has confirmed her admission, though detailed updates on her health have not yet been released by the hospital or her family. Sources say the 93‑year‑old singer remains in a critical but stabilised state, with doctors offering intensive care to manage heart‑related complications.

A living icon of Indian music

Bhosle is one of the most recorded and versatile playback singers in the world, with a career spanning over eight decades. She has sung in hundreds of films across multiple languages, delivering peppy chartbusters, soulful melodies and classical gems that have become part of India’s cultural DNA.

Her first film song, “Chala Chala Nav Bala” for the Marathi film Majha Bal (1943), set the stage for a journey that would include hits like Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, O Haseena Zulfon Wali, the haunting Dil Cheez Kya Hai, and the classical masterpiece Tora Man Darpan Kehlaye. Even in her 90s, she continued to perform at live shows, once saying, “At the age of 90, I have to stand for three hours on stage and sing songs, I’m happy I can do this at this age.”

Global reach and cultural legacy

Bhosle’s appeal extends far beyond Bollywood. Her 1970 song “Mujhe Maar Dalo” was recently sampled by rapper Kanye West on his album Bully, underscoring the enduring global influence of her voice. A viral video of her singing and dancing to the Punjabi track “Tauba Tauba” last year further reminded fans that her energy and stage presence remain unmatched.

With over 12,000 songs credited to her name, she is widely regarded as one of the most recorded artists in Indian music history. Her work with composer husband RD Burman, hits with lyricists and music directors across generations, and collaborations with stars like Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Ananya Panday, kept her relevant even in the 21st century.

Family, roots and personal life

Born Asha Mangeshkar in 1933 in Sangli, Maharashtra, she is part of the legendary Mangeshkar musical dynasty. Her father was Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar and her mother Shevanti, while her elder sister was the legendary Lata Mangeshkar.

She eloped and married Ganpatrao Bhosle in 1949, with the couple divorcing in 1960. In 1980, she married composer RD Burman, with whom she created a unique blend of romance, funk and rock that defined much of the 1980s and 1990s Hindi‑film sound. Bhosle has three children—Hemant, Varsha and Anand—and has remained a symbol of resilience, artistry and longevity.

News of her cardiac arrest has sent waves of concern through the music fraternity and among fans worldwide, who are flooding social media with prayers and messages of recovery. As more clinical updates emerge from Breach Candy Hospital, the nation waits and hopes for good news about the woman whose voice has been the soundtrack of generations.
