Aamir Khan’s recent comments distancing his iconic 3 Idiots character Rancho from education reformer Sonam Wangchuk have ignited a fresh controversy, drawing sharp criticism from actors Rakhi Sawant and comedian Sunil Pal. The debate comes at a sensitive time, with Wangchuk battling deteriorating health after an extended hunger strike, making the timing of Aamir’s remarks a talking point across social media.

The controversy began during a question-and-answer session at the London Indian Film Festival on July 16, where Aamir Khan was asked about the long-standing belief that his beloved character Phunsukh Wangdu, popularly known as Rancho in 3 Idiots, was inspired by Sonam Wangchuk. For years, audiences have associated the character with the Ladakh-based innovator and education reformer, with even members of the film’s cast previously acknowledging the connection.

However, Aamir dismissed the claim, saying neither he nor director Rajkumar Hirani and writer Abhijat Joshi knew Sonam Wangchuk while developing the film. Referring to comments made by co-star Omi Vaidya, the actor said Vaidya was mistaken in suggesting otherwise. At the same time, Aamir praised Wangchuk’s work and expressed concern over his health, adding that the activist deserved respect for his contributions regardless of any connection to 3 Idiots.

While the clarification may have been intended to set the record straight, it triggered a strong backlash, especially because it came while Wangchuk remains at the centre of nationwide attention over his prolonged hunger strike.

Among the most vocal critics were Rakhi Sawant and comedian Sunil Pal, who released a joint video on Instagram questioning Aamir’s statement. Rakhi accused the superstar of distancing himself from a narrative that had long benefited the film and its success.

Speaking directly to Aamir, she said people were deeply disappointed to hear him deny any connection between 3 Idiotsand Sonam Wangchuk after the film became a massive blockbuster. According to Rakhi, audiences had celebrated the story believing it reflected Wangchuk’s life and ideals, making Aamir’s latest remarks difficult for many fans to accept.

Sunil Pal joined the criticism in his trademark comic style, singing a satirical line aimed at the actor while implying that Wangchuk’s story had played a role in the film’s popularity. The video quickly gained traction online, adding another layer to the already heated debate.

Beyond criticising Aamir, both Rakhi and Sunil shifted the conversation back to Wangchuk’s ongoing protest and the issues he has been raising. They urged the government to address concerns surrounding alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination and appealed for justice for students whose futures have been affected.

Rakhi also reiterated her support for Wangchuk, saying she plans to travel to Delhi to stand with the protesters. In an emotional appeal, she urged the activist not to sacrifice his life, describing him as someone whose work is invaluable for the country and its students.

The controversy has once again highlighted how 3 Idiots continues to resonate nearly two decades after its release. But this time, the discussion has moved beyond cinema, intertwining Bollywood, public perception and a real-life movement that has captured national attention. As Wangchuk’s health remains a matter of concern, the debate over Aamir Khan’s remarks has become yet another chapter in an increasingly emotional public conversation.
