A dream of making it big in Bollywood turned into one of Mumbai’s most disturbing murder cases, exposing not only the dark side of blind ambition but also a conspiracy involving criminals, alleged police complicity, and years of agony for a grieving family.
Karan Kakkad, a 28-year-old businessman from Delhi, had already built a successful event management company before deciding to chase a new dream in Mumbai—becoming a Bollywood film producer. Encouraged by his family, he shifted to the city, rented an apartment in the upscale Oberoi Springs complex in Andheri, and purchased a second-hand BMW to match the glamorous lifestyle often associated with the film industry.
According to investigators, that image of wealth made him an easy target.Police alleged that notorious gangster Vijay Palande masterminded a carefully planned conspiracy to exploit Karan’s ambitions. Assisting him was aspiring model and actress Simran Sood, who allegedly befriended Karan after learning that he was financially well-off and eager to invest in films. By promising introductions to influential people in the industry, she reportedly gained his trust and lured him into what he believed would be a professional meeting.
Instead, Karan walked into a deadly trap. Investigators say he was taken to a rented flat where Palande and his associate Dhananjay Shinde were waiting. Once inside, Karan was overpowered and held captive. The gang allegedly stole his bank cards, withdrew money from his accounts, and used his credit cards for shopping. After exhausting his finances, the accused allegedly decided to eliminate him.
The details that later emerged from the investigation remain deeply disturbing. According to police, Palande confessed that Karan was given a horrifying choice—either have his throat slit while fully conscious or first swallow 14 sleeping pills. Hoping to avoid the pain, Karan reportedly chose the pills.
After he lost consciousness, investigators allege that he was killed inside the apartment. His body was later dismembered, placed inside his own BMW, and transported to the isolated forests of Kumbharli Ghat, where the remains were dumped in an attempt to erase all evidence.
The murder might have remained unsolved if not for the relentless efforts of Karan’s brother, Hanish Kakkad. Refusing to believe his brother had simply disappeared, Hanish travelled from Delhi to Mumbai and personally searched for clues. He obtained CCTV footage showing Palande and Shinde using Karan’s stolen ATM card and submitted it to local police. However, the investigation reportedly failed to move forward at the time.
The breakthrough came unexpectedly during the investigation into another high-profile murder—that of Delhi businessman Arun Tikku. When Palande was arrested in that case, Hanish recognized him from television news reports and immediately alerted Mumbai Crime Branch officers.
Following Palande’s interrogation, police searched Kumbharli Ghat and recovered skeletal remains that DNA tests later confirmed belonged to Karan Kakkad. Officers also recovered his silver bracelet, a Samsung Galaxy Tab, a bloodstained chopper, and a sickle believed to be connected to the crime.
The investigation took an even more serious turn when allegations of police complicity surfaced. According to investigators, police constable Amol Deshpande allegedly signed as a witness on the rental agreement that enabled the accused to obtain the apartment using fake identities. Inspector Sanjay Shinde, who was reportedly related to Palande, also came under scrutiny for allegedly shielding the gangster and discouraging officers from pursuing him despite repeated complaints from Karan’s family. Investigators further alleged that a Mahindra Xylo linked to the inspector was used during the timeline of the crime.
For Karan’s family, the tragedy extended far beyond the murder itself. Hanish and their elderly mother spent years travelling repeatedly between Delhi and Mumbai, seeking justice while navigating legal procedures. They also reportedly struggled to obtain Karan’s death certificate, delaying access to funds that remained locked in his bank accounts.
Today, Vijay Palande, Dhananjay Shinde, and Manoj Gajkosh remain in jail in connection with the murders of both Karan Kakkad and Arun Tikku. Simran Sood has consistently denied the allegations against her and was released after spending three years in custody.
The Karan Kakkad case remains a haunting reminder that ambition can sometimes attract dangerous predators—and that persistence by a victim’s family can become the key to uncovering the truth when justice initially appears out of reach.
