Actor Sanjay Dutt marked Gandhi Jayanti with a special social media tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, revisiting some of the most memorable moments from his much-loved film Lage Raho Munna Bhai. The actor shared a collection of clips from the 2006 film, which brought Gandhian philosophy into a contemporary setting through humour, emotion and an engaging social message.

On the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Dutt took his fans back to the world of Munna Bhai and the film’s unique interpretation of Gandhi’s principles. Sharing the video clips on social media, the actor highlighted the timeless relevance of values such as truth, peace, compassion and non-violence.

“Some values never go out of time. Remembering Mahatma Gandhiji and the ideals of truth, peace and compassion that continue to inspire generations. Happy Gandhi Jayanti,” Dutt wrote in his post.

The actor’s tribute also revived memories of the character that became one of the most popular roles of his career. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, Lage Raho Munna Bhai was the sequel to the hugely successful Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. and continued the story of Munna Bhai, a Mumbai-based gangster played by Sanjay Dutt.

In the film, Munna’s life undergoes a dramatic transformation after he begins seeing the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi. Through his conversations with Gandhi, Munna gradually understands the importance of truth, non-violence and compassion. Instead of responding to difficult situations with aggression, he begins applying Gandhi’s principles to everyday problems.

The film popularised the term “Gandhigiri”, presenting Gandhian ideals in a language and format that connected strongly with contemporary audiences. Its humorous treatment of serious social issues, combined with emotional storytelling, helped the film become a cultural phenomenon.

One of the film’s central messages was that non-violence and kindness could be powerful tools for addressing conflict. Munna’s transformation from a gangster into someone attempting to solve problems through peaceful means gave the audience an entertaining yet thought-provoking interpretation of Gandhi’s philosophy.

Gandhi Jayanti is observed every year on October 2 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat. Gandhi played a pivotal role in India’s freedom movement and became internationally recognised for his philosophy of non-violence.

The United Nations also observes October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence, recognising the significance of Gandhi’s philosophy and its broader message of peaceful conflict resolution.

Dutt’s decision to revisit Lage Raho Munna Bhai on the occasion therefore carried a strong connection with one of his most recognisable cinematic characters. The film continues to be remembered for making Gandhian principles accessible to a new generation through popular cinema.

On the work front, Sanjay Dutt was recently seen in Aakhri Sawal. The film is directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Abhijeet Mohan Warang and presented by Nikhil Nanda. It is produced by Nikhil Nanda and Sanjay Dutt, with the story, screenplay and dialogues written by Utkarsh Naithani.

Before this, Dutt also garnered attention for his portrayal of SP Chaudhary Aslam Khan in the Dhurandhar franchise.
