The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has announced a one-day hunger strike on October 15 in Delhi to protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid the ongoing agitation over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The decision was taken during a meeting at the party headquarters attended by Delhi MLAs, councillors and district-level office-bearers. Party leaders said the protest would be part of their continuing campaign against the Election Commission and the central government.
AAP leaders and workers from across Delhi are expected to gather at the party headquarters and observe the fast as a symbolic demonstration. The party has also reiterated its demand for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.
AAP Plans to Intensify Protest Against Chief Election Commissioner
The meeting was attended by Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, Delhi AAP president Saurabh Bharadwaj, and former ministers and MLAs Gopal Rai and Imran Hussain, among other party functionaries.
Discussions focused on the party’s strategy for intensifying protests in the coming days over its concerns regarding the electoral roll revision exercise.
After the meeting, AAP leader Gopal Rai told ANI that the party had decided to continue its agitation and organise a hunger strike on October 15.
Rai said leaders and workers from across Delhi would assemble at the party headquarters to participate in the protest. He described the hunger strike as part of the party’s stated commitment to peaceful demonstrations in the Gandhian tradition.
AAP Leaders and Workers Detained Near Janpath
Following the meeting at the party office, AAP leaders and workers marched towards Jantar Mantar. However, police stopped the procession near Janpath, leading to clashes between police personnel and party workers.
Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, Delhi unit president Saurabh Bharadwaj, several MLAs, councillors and other party workers were detained during the incident.
The detained leaders and workers were released later in the evening.
The incident added to tensions surrounding the party’s protests against the Election Commission and its handling of the SIR exercise.
SIR Dispute Continues to Drive Political Agitation in Delhi
The proposed hunger strike comes amid an ongoing political dispute over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. AAP has been demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation and has announced further demonstrations as part of its campaign.
The October 15 fast is expected to bring together party leaders and workers from across Delhi. The party has described the action as a symbolic protest intended to highlight its objections to the electoral roll revision process.
The continuing demonstrations reflect the wider political confrontation over the SIR exercise, with opposition parties raising concerns about its implementation and the Election Commission’s decisions.
