A 17-year-old NEET aspirant died by suicide in Ahmedabad’s New Ranip area in the early hours of June 17, police said. The student reportedly cut through the balcony grill of his sixth‑floor apartment at Aristo Anandam Flats and jumped at around 2:30 am. A security guard witnessed the fall and alerted others; the student was declared dead at the scene and his body sent to Civil Hospital for post‑mortem.
Preliminary inquiries by Sabarmati Police Station found the student was preparing for the NEET re‑examination, but officers said the exact motive for the suicide remains unclear. Family members told police he had not expressed fear or anxiety about the test and that his earlier NEET attempt had gone well. Investigators have seized his laptop and mobile phone and will question friends and relatives as part of the probe.
The Ahmedabad case comes amid a spate of deaths involving NEET aspirants nationwide. In the past week, students in Sikar (Rajasthan), Dehradun (Uttarakhand) and Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) died by suicide, with at least some cases linked to the stress of repeated attempts and the fallout from a recent NEET paper leak. Those incidents have renewed debate over student mental health and the pressures associated with high‑stakes entrance exams. Police said further inquiries are underway to determine the circumstances of the Ahmedabad death.
