One of the biggest transfer stories in IPL history may be quietly taking shape behind the scenes.
Just a few years after returning to Mumbai Indians amid massive fanfare, Hardik Pandya could be heading for the exit door. According to reports, two former IPL champions—Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals—have emerged as serious contenders to sign the Indian all-rounder as the trade window gathers momentum ahead of the next season.
Hardik’s second stint with Mumbai Indians has been anything but smooth. After leading Gujarat Titans to an IPL title in 2022 and a runners-up finish in 2023, he returned to the franchise where he first became a star. The expectation was simple: guide Mumbai back to their glory days.
Instead, results have fallen well short of expectations.
Under Hardik’s leadership, Mumbai Indians have reached the playoffs only once in the last three seasons. The 2026 campaign proved particularly disappointing, with the five-time champions finishing ninth on the table after winning just four of their fourteen matches. Hardik himself endured one of the toughest seasons of his career, managing only 206 runs and four wickets in ten appearances.
Reports of dressing-room tensions and a lack of backing from senior players have further fueled speculation that both the player and franchise may be open to a fresh start.
Among the interested teams, Kolkata Knight Riders appear desperate to solve their leadership crisis. Since their title-winning campaign under Shreyas Iyer in 2024, KKR have struggled to find a long-term captain. Despite Ajinkya Rahane’s experience, the franchise has failed to qualify for the playoffs in consecutive seasons.
Sources suggest KKR’s management views Hardik as the ideal candidate to rebuild the side and restore its championship ambitions. Discussions reportedly began last season and have resumed in recent weeks, indicating serious intent from the Kolkata camp.
However, Rajasthan Royals could ultimately prove to be the stronger contender.
Following Sanju Samson’s departure to Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan handed captaincy duties to Riyan Parag, a move that surprised many observers. Now, reports claim advanced talks are underway between Hardik’s representatives and the Royals regarding a potential blockbuster switch.
What makes the Rajasthan option particularly intriguing is the possibility of a major player exchange.
Mumbai Indians are reportedly interested in acquiring Yashasvi Jaiswal as part of any deal. The young opener is regarded as one of India’s brightest batting talents and could become a cornerstone of Mumbai’s future plans. With Rohit Sharma approaching the latter stages of his career, securing a player of Jaiswal’s caliber would represent a significant investment in the franchise’s long-term future.
There are also whispers that Jaiswal has been unsettled after being overlooked for leadership opportunities and following the rapid rise of teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi within the Royals setup.
For Mumbai Indians, the coming weeks could define the next chapter of their rebuild. For Hardik Pandya, it may be a chance to restart his IPL journey after a challenging period.
Whether he ends up in Kolkata or Rajasthan, one thing is clear: the IPL’s next blockbuster transfer saga has officially begun.
