The One-Day Tri-Nation “A” Series final between India A and Sri Lanka A arrived in Dambulla carrying plenty of baggage. Their previous meeting had everything drama, a tied game, a fading-light Super Over and even a heated on-field exchange involving India’s teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and the Sri Lankan fielders.

If anyone wondered whether the 15-year-old would be affected by the tensions from that encounter, he answered in the most explosive way possible with his bat.

Under clear blue skies at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, Sri Lanka A captain Sahan Arachchige won the toss and opted to field first. India A skipper Tilak Varma stated that his side was happy to bat, especially since they had not chased a target in the tournament and wanted to put a challenging total on the board.

What followed was complete batting blitz.

Opening the innings alongside Priyansh Arya, Sooryavanshi launched a breathtaking assault on the Sri Lankan attack from the very first over. The youngster, fresh off his remarkable IPL 2026 campaign where he claimed the Orange Cap with 776 runs, looked as though he had brought his T20 mindset into a 50-over final.

The left-hander raced to his half-century in just 11 deliveries, equalling the record for the fastest fifty in List-A cricket history. There was no respite for the bowlers as boundaries and sixes flowed at will. Mohamed Shiraz was at the receiving end of Sooryavanshi’s breathtaking assault, conceding 26 runs in a single over as the teenager hammered three sixes and two boundaries.

By the end of just five overs, India A had raced to a staggering 88 without loss, scoring at an astonishing run rate of 17.60. The Dambulla crowd could rarely believe what they were witnessing. At the heart of the mayhem was Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, unbeaten on a breathtaking 65 off only 16 deliveries. At the other end, Priyansh Arya played the perfect supporting role, contributing a brisk 21 off 14 balls and ensuring the momentum never dipped.

The opening burst was about far more than quick runs. It carried the feel of a team making a statement. The memories of the dramatic league encounter—the tied game, the fading-light Super Over, and the heated exchange involving Sooryavanshi—were still fresh. India A walked into the final with a point to prove, and their teenage prodigy appeared determined to settle matters in the most emphatic manner possible.

Every boundary seemed to carry a message, and every six further shifted the momentum in India’s favour. In a high-pressure final, Sooryavanshi did not merely seize the spotlight; he owned it completely, turning the grand finale into a stage for one of the most electrifying starts seen in recent List-A cricket.
