In one of the biggest player movements in IPL history, star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has officially returned to Delhi Capitals, ending his brief but turbulent stint with Lucknow Super Giants. The blockbuster trade has not only reshaped the futures of two franchises but has also delivered one of the most emotional stories of the IPL off-season.
The deal sees Pant head back to Delhi while ace spinner Kuldeep Yadav moves in the opposite direction to Lucknow. However, what has truly grabbed attention is the financial sacrifice Pant made to facilitate the move. The wicketkeeper-batter, who became the most expensive player in IPL history when LSG purchased him for a staggering ₹27 crore ahead of the 2025 season, reportedly accepted a massive ₹12 crore pay cut to return to the franchise where his IPL journey began. His revised salary now stands at ₹15 crore.
For Delhi Capitals fans, the move feels less like a transfer and more like a homecoming. Pant spent nine seasons with DC between 2016 and 2024, establishing himself as the face of the franchise. During that period, he became Delhi’s all-time leading run-scorer, amassing 3,284 runs in 111 matches while building a strong emotional connection with the fan base.
The most heartwarming moment of the entire saga came after the deal was finalized. In a video shared by Delhi Capitals, current captain Axar Patel revealed how Pant immediately tried to call him with the news. However, Axar was busy taking care of his child and missed multiple calls. When he finally returned the call, Pant reportedly couldn’t contain his excitement and said, “Bhai, it’s confirmed. Main wapas aa raha hu.”
Axar’s response perfectly captured the sentiment surrounding the transfer. Referring to Pant’s return, he quoted the popular proverb, “Subah ka bhula jab shaam ko ghar aaye usey bhoola nahi kehte,” suggesting that someone who returns home can never truly be considered lost.
The trade comes after a disappointing period for both Pant and Lucknow Super Giants. Despite arriving with enormous expectations, Pant struggled to justify his record-breaking price tag, scoring 269 runs in IPL 2025 and 312 runs in IPL 2026. LSG’s fortunes also nosedived, with the franchise finishing at the bottom of the table last season. Pant was eventually removed from the captaincy, fueling speculation about his future.
Delhi Capitals, meanwhile, have endured a difficult stretch of their own. The franchise missed the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season in 2026, prompting management to rethink its long-term strategy. Bringing back a proven match-winner and franchise icon is being viewed as both a cricketing and emotional reset.
Whether Pant eventually reclaims the captaincy remains to be seen. For now, though, the story is simple: one of Delhi’s favorite sons is back where he belongs, and IPL fans can’t stop talking about it.
