A five-storey building collapsed in the Saidulajab area of South Delhi’s Mehrauli on Saturday evening, triggering a major rescue operation as several people are feared trapped under the debris.

According to officials, the Delhi Fire Service received information about the collapse at around 7:44 pm and immediately rushed multiple teams to the spot. Firefighters, police personnel and other emergency responders are carrying out search-and-rescue operations to locate those who may be buried beneath the rubble.

The building, located on Western Marg in Saidulajab near Saket Metro station, reportedly collapsed completely, leaving behind a massive mound of debris. Police sources said a coaching institute was operating on the ground floor, while construction work was underway on the upper floors. Authorities suspect that some of those trapped may be students, though this has not been officially confirmed.

Officials said details regarding casualties and the exact number of people trapped remain unconfirmed as rescue efforts continue. Emergency teams have been working through the night to clear the rubble and search for survivors.

The collapse has caused panic in the area, with residents gathering near the site as rescue vehicles and fire tenders rushed in. So far, no major damage to nearby buildings has been reported, but the focus remains on locating and rescuing those stuck inside the collapsed structure.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of the collapse. However, the presence of both a functioning coaching centre and ongoing construction activity on different floors has raised questions about the building’s structural condition. An official assessment is expected once the rescue operation is complete and the site is secured.

The situation remains fluid, and further details on casualties, injuries and possible survivors are awaited.
