Strong earthquake tremors shook Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir and many other North Indian states on Saturday evening sparking concern but no initial indications of severe structural damage. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) claimed the epicentre of the quake was in Afghanistan and it was 6.2 on the Richter scale. The agency listed the occurrence as “EQ of M: 6.2, On: 27/06/2026 19:04:51 IST, Lat: 36.442 N, Long: 70.672 E, Depth: 215 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”
The earthquake was felt throughout the national capital and portions of Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, forcing people to run out of their homes and briefly halting traffic and metro services as a precaution while inspections were conducted. Local emergency services and disaster response teams watched the situation and urged people to keep calm, avoid elevators and go to open spaces if they sensed additional shaking.
The quake’s depth of 215 km meant the strength at the surface was mitigated, decreasing the chances of widespread destruction, seismologists said. Authorities advised the public to stay tuned to official updates, report any damage or casualties and keep vigilant for aftershocks as additional assessments continue to examine the damages in border areas closer to the epicenter.
