Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Monday chaired his first major high-level review meeting with senior IAS and IPS officers since assuming office, signalling that his government is shifting into full governance mode. Held at the Secretariat’s Namakkal Kavignar Maligai, the marathon meeting reviewed the functioning of multiple government departments, with a strong emphasis on law and order, women’s safety, administrative efficiency, and anti-drug measures.

The meeting comes at a politically significant time, with the opposition DMK recently questioning the new government’s handling of public services and administrative issues. Through this comprehensive review, the Chief Minister sought to reinforce his administration’s focus on governance and accountability.

Review of 28 Government Departments

The review meeting was conducted in three sessions, covering the performance and functioning of 28 government departments. Senior bureaucrats, including District Collectors, Superintendents of Police (SPs), Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs), and the Director General of Police (DGP), participated in the discussions.

One of the primary focus areas was strengthening law and order across the state. The Chief Minister reviewed crime prevention strategies, cybercrime investigations, police accountability, and the speedy disposal of cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Officials were also directed to improve coordination among various departments to ensure faster responses to public safety concerns.

Women’s Safety Remains a Top Priority

Women’s safety featured prominently during the review. Chief Minister Vijay assessed the functioning of the recently launched Singappen Athiradi Padai, the state’s dedicated women’s safety task force.

Backed by a financial allocation of ₹354 crore for surveillance systems and modern patrol vehicles, the task force has been created to strengthen security in vulnerable areas. During the meeting, the Chief Minister instructed officials to maximise the deployment of the force in locations where women face higher safety risks and to ensure quicker responses to complaints.

The review reflects the government’s attempt to deliver on one of the major commitments announced during Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony.

Crackdown on Drugs and Better Public Service

The meeting also focused on the state’s ongoing “Drug-Free Tamil Nadu” campaign. Officials reviewed anti-narcotics operations and discussed measures to intensify action against drug suppliers and trafficking networks.

The Chief Minister directed police officials to strengthen enforcement while simultaneously expanding awareness campaigns in schools and colleges to educate students about the dangers of substance abuse.

Apart from law enforcement, Vijay instructed senior officials to adopt technology-driven governance by introducing real-time monitoring systems for law and order and public grievance redressal. He also emphasised closer coordination between district administration and police departments to ensure faster action during emergencies.

Citizen-Centric Governance

One of the key messages from the meeting was the importance of maintaining direct communication with the public. The Chief Minister instructed bureaucrats to remain accessible, respond promptly to grievances, and ensure government services reach citizens without unnecessary delays.

The review meeting sends a clear signal that the new administration intends to focus on efficient governance and quicker decision-making during its initial months in office. As the government begins implementing its policy agenda, future review meetings are expected to closely monitor departmental performance and the progress of key public welfare initiatives.
