One of the biggest transfer stories in Indian Premier League history appears to be gathering momentum. According to reports, Hardik Pandya could be on his way out of the Mumbai Indians (MI) after a difficult IPL 2026 season, with several franchises already exploring the possibility of securing the star all-rounder’s services.
The potential move has sparked widespread discussion across the cricketing world, as seven IPL teams are reportedly interested in signing Pandya through the league’s trade window. Among them, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have emerged as the strongest contenders, setting the stage for a high-profile battle ahead of the next season.
Why Hardik Pandya Could Leave Mumbai Indians
Reports suggest that the possibility of Pandya’s departure comes after a challenging campaign for Mumbai Indians. The five-time champions endured one of their poorest seasons in recent memory, finishing ninth on the points table and failing to mount a serious playoff challenge. Alongside the disappointing results, reports indicate that the dressing-room environment became increasingly strained during the season.
Sources have also claimed that the physically and mentally demanding campaign left Pandya exhausted, prompting discussions about seeking a fresh environment where he can reset both as a player and a leader. While neither Pandya nor Mumbai Indians has officially confirmed an exit, speculation surrounding his future has intensified since the season ended.
Seven Teams Interested, Two Stay Away
The race for Pandya’s signature has reportedly attracted interest from seven of the league’s ten franchises. Leading the chase are Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals, with four other teams also monitoring the situation closely. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball, combined with his leadership experience, makes him one of the most valuable players available in the trade market.
Interestingly, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad are the only franchises reportedly showing no interest in pursuing the all-rounder. RCB, fresh off their IPL 2026 title-winning campaign, appear satisfied with their existing squad, while SRH are also understood to be content with their current team composition.
CSK and KKR Offer Different Opportunities
Among the interested franchises, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders have reportedly taken very different approaches. CSK are believed to view Pandya as a marquee addition capable of helping the franchise transition into a new era following the gradual end of the MS Dhoni chapter. After missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons, the franchise is looking to strengthen its core.
However, reports suggest CSK have not promised Pandya the captaincy immediately, instead focusing on his value as an experienced all-rounder and leader within the squad.
KKR, on the other hand, are reportedly prepared to offer him the captaincy from the outset. The franchise views Pandya as someone capable of leading the side over the long term while remaining one of its premier match-winners.
Rajasthan Royals have also been linked with the player, with early speculation even suggesting the possibility of blockbuster player-swap discussions, although no formal proposal has been confirmed.
A Complex Trade Still Needs Several Approvals
Despite growing speculation, any move remains far from complete. Under IPL regulations, franchises cannot directly negotiate with contracted players without involving their current team. Any discussions must first take place between the franchises before a trade can progress.
Even if Mumbai Indians and another franchise reach an agreement, Pandya’s consent is mandatory. The all-rounder would have the final say on whether he wishes to join a particular team, especially if factors such as leadership responsibilities influence his decision.
Financial considerations also remain crucial. Mumbai Indians must decide whether they prefer a cash-based transfer that frees up salary-cap space or a player-for-player exchange that strengthens their own squad.
Reports further indicate that MI are keen to resolve Pandya’s future before making decisions regarding another high-profile Indian player whose long-term role within the franchise is also under discussion.
A Defining Move Ahead of IPL 2027?
If the transfer materialises, it could become one of the most significant trades in IPL history. For now, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders appear to be leading the race, with CSK reportedly holding a slight advantage. However, until formal negotiations conclude and Hardik Pandya makes his decision, the IPL’s biggest transfer story remains wide open.
