The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 is gaining momentum, and all eyes will be on Old Trafford on Sunday as an in-form India takes on a determined South Africa in a crucial Group 1 clash.

The Women in Blue have been nearly unstoppable so far. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, India sits at the top of the standings after registering two convincing wins. They began their campaign with a comfortable victory over Pakistan before producing a batting masterclass against debutants Netherlands.

India piled up 209 for five in that match their highest-ever total in a Women’s T20 World Cup underlining the team’s explosive form.

A major reason behind India’s flying start has been vice-captain Smriti Mandhana. The stylish opener is currently the tournament’s leading run-scorer and heads into Sunday’s encounter after scoring back-to-back fifties, including a brilliant 74 against the Netherlands.

She has received excellent support from Shafali Verma, who smashed a 38-ball 55 before also making an impact with the ball, claiming figures of three for 20 against the Dutch.

Despite their strong start, India cannot afford to take their foot off the pedal. With a high profile clash against six-time champions Australia still to come, every point could prove crucial in the race for the semi-finals.

South Africa, meanwhile, enter the contest with their semi-final hopes on the line. The Proteas lost to Australia in their opening match before bouncing back with a hard-fought victory over Pakistan. Another defeat could significantly reduce their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals.

The game also promises an exciting individual battle between India’s in-form Smriti Mandhana and South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt, one of the world’s most dependable batters.

Adding another layer of intrigue, the encounter comes months after the two sides met in the ODI World Cup final, where India lifted the trophy despite Laura Wolvaardt’s magnificent century.

Interestingly, this will be the first-ever T20 World Cup meeting between India and South Africa women. With India’s unbeaten run on the line and South Africa fighting to stay alive, Old Trafford could be in for a thrilling encounter.
