Dhaval Amratbhai Patel, an Indian national who had entered the United States illegally, was arrested by authorities for allegedly assaulting another person with a baseball bat.

The Worcester Police Department arrested Patel in Massachusetts on May 16 and charged him with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. The police report stated that he got into an argument with a customer at the liquor store where Patel worked. The conflict soon escalated as the accused grabbed a baseball bat and struck the man.

The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement on Wednesday that “sanctuary politicians in Massachusetts” did not cooperate with U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and Patel was released from jail without notification to the agency. ICE subsequently arrested Patel on May 18.

According to the DHS statement, Patel had entered the United States at an unknown date and time.

The DHS shared a post on X with Patel’s image, criticising “sanctuary politicians”.

“This SICKO SLUGGER beat a man with a baseball bat – and Massachusetts sanctuary politicians RELEASED HIM,” the post said “Now, Dhaval Amratbhai Patel, a criminal illegal alien from India, has been ARRESTED by @ICEgov. He faces charges for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Sanctuary politicians must STOP choosing to release criminals like this into our communities and work with us to get criminal illegal aliens out of our country.”

Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis echoed the statement, “The illegal individual from India thought he could go around beating people with a baseball bat. Sanctuary politicians released him from jail after his arrest for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Sanctuary politicians must stop choosing to release criminals into our communities and work with DHS to get criminals out of country. By refusing to cooperate with ICE law enforcement, sanctuary politicians are putting the safety of their citizens at risk.”
