Meta-owned WhatsApp is set for a major leadership change, with Will Cathcart stepping down after nearly seven years as chief and Indian entrepreneur Kunal Shah, founder of CRED, taking over the global messaging platform. The move marks one of the most prominent Indian-origin appointments in global tech leadership.

According to reports, Cathcart will move into a new role at Meta focused on product building and artificial intelligence initiatives. Shah, meanwhile, will leave his operating role at CRED, where Miten Sampat has been named interim chief executive.

The leadership transition comes alongside a major Meta investment in CRED. The company is reportedly backing the Indian fintech startup with a $900 million financing round, giving Meta a minority stake and strengthening its ties with India’s digital ecosystem.

Shah is widely known in India’s startup world as the founder of FreeCharge and later CRED, a platform that has become one of the country’s most closely watched fintech companies. His elevation to WhatsApp’s top role reflects Meta’s growing focus on India, one of WhatsApp’s largest and most important markets.

The announcement has also sparked strong reaction online, with many calling it a proud moment for India’s startup and technology sector. WhatsApp remains a critical product for Meta, powering communication for billions of users globally and serving as a key platform for business messaging, payments and digital engagement in India.

For Meta, the appointment appears to signal both continuity and strategic change: a leadership handover at one of its biggest products, plus deeper investment in India’s startup landscape. For Shah, it marks a significant move from building a fintech company to leading one of the world’s most widely used communication platforms.
