Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh: All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has put Kanpur on the party’s electoral map, announcing that the AIMIM will field a candidate from the constituency in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and that he will personally campaign for the party nominee.
The announcement, made during Owaisi’s public meeting in Kanpur, was accompanied by an unusually direct promise of repeated campaigning. Owaisi said he would return to the constituency two or three times and campaign among voters, including through door-to-door visits.
“Kanpur will have a Majlis candidate,” Owaisi said, adding that while he could not visit the city during the previous election cycle, he intended to personally campaign this time. He later shared a video of his Kanpur visit on X on September 22.
The significance of the announcement extends beyond the selection of a single constituency. It comes at a time when AIMIM is attempting to expand its organisational presence across Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. The party has been increasing its political activity in several parts of the state and has indicated that it is preparing an organisational network across a large number of Assembly constituencies.
From Rally Speech to Doorstep Campaign
Owaisi’s Kanpur address placed considerable emphasis on physical campaigning rather than simply making a formal electoral announcement.
He told the gathering that he would walk through the constituency’s streets and neighbourhoods, even if he could spend only a limited amount of time there. He also spoke about visiting residents at their homes, including elderly people and women.
The message was clear: AIMIM intends to make its presence visible at the local level rather than rely exclusively on the party chief’s public rallies.
Such a campaign could also provide the party with an opportunity to build a local organisational structure around its eventual candidate. The candidate’s identity, however, was not announced in the remarks cited in reports of the meeting.
Kanpur Becomes Part of a Larger UP Strategy
The Kanpur announcement comes alongside Owaisi’s broader efforts to establish AIMIM as a participant in the political negotiations surrounding the 2027 Uttar Pradesh election.
Owaisi has recently said that AIMIM is open to an alliance with parties that want to prevent the BJP from returning to power in the state. He has set October 2 as the date by which the party intends to announce its alliance decision, if it reaches an agreement with other parties.
That makes the Kanpur announcement particularly relevant. By declaring an intention to contest the seat while simultaneously keeping the door open for alliances, AIMIM appears to be pursuing two tracks: building its own electoral organisation while retaining flexibility over broader seat-sharing arrangements.
The party’s previous performance in Uttar Pradesh also provides context. AIMIM contested around 95 seats in the 2022 Assembly election but did not win a seat, according to an NDTV analysis of the party’s electoral strategy.
Madrasas and Identity Politics Enter the Campaign
Owaisi also used his Kanpur platform to attack the Uttar Pradesh government over its actions concerning madrasas.
He invoked the historical participation of Muslim religious scholars in the freedom movement and alleged that institutions associated with that history were being targeted by the Yogi Adityanath government.
He also launched a sharp verbal attack on Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, contrasting what he described as the role of Muslims in the freedom struggle with the conduct of the government today.
These remarks add a wider ideological dimension to AIMIM’s Kanpur campaign, with Owaisi linking contemporary political questions to issues of representation, minority institutions and historical memory.
A Campaign With Two Timelines
The Kanpur announcement therefore operates on two timelines.
At the constituency level, AIMIM is preparing to put forward a candidate and deploy Owaisi himself for campaigning. At the state level, the party is simultaneously negotiating its possible place within a broader political alliance ahead of the 2027 election.
For Kanpur voters, the immediate question will be who AIMIM eventually nominates and how effectively the party can translate Owaisi’s personal campaigning into a local organisation.
For Uttar Pradesh politics more broadly, the October 2 alliance deadline could provide another indication of how AIMIM intends to position itself in the state’s increasingly competitive electoral landscape.
