A major political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after Chennai Police launched an investigation into an alleged conspiracy, code-named “Project Meghalaya,” which was reportedly aimed at destabilising the state government led by actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).

According to investigators, the alleged operation involved attempts to lure several TVK legislators with huge cash offers to rebel against their own party during crucial Assembly proceedings. If successful, the alleged plan could have weakened the government’s numbers and paved the way for its collapse.

The investigation began after TVK MLA N. Elaiyaraja, who represents the Uthangarai Assembly constituency, filed a complaint with the police. In his complaint, Elaiyaraja alleged that YouTuber Thirunavukkarasu, associated with an opinion polling group called IPDS, along with his associates, approached him with an offer of ₹35 crore.

According to the MLA, the money was allegedly offered in exchange for voting against the TVK government by defying the party whip during an important Assembly vote. Elaiyaraja claimed he immediately rejected the proposal.

The MLA further alleged that after refusing the offer, he and his family started receiving threats, prompting him to approach law enforcement authorities. His complaint led to a wider investigation into what police believe may have been a coordinated attempt to influence multiple legislators.

Investigators suspect that nearly 15 TVK MLAs were allegedly targeted as part of the operation. Police are examining whether similar approaches were made to other lawmakers and whether the conspiracy extended beyond the individuals already identified.

The probe has already resulted in the arrest of nine people, with authorities continuing to gather evidence and question additional individuals connected to the case.

As the investigation expanded, Chennai Police issued summons to former DMK minister Senthil Balaji and his brother Ashok, bringing prominent political figures into the spotlight. While officials have not publicly disclosed the nature of their alleged involvement, the summons have intensified political debate surrounding the case.

The investigation has also triggered concerns over press freedom after senior journalist Vijayan from regional news channel Puthiya Thalaimurai was questioned by police. Authorities reportedly examined message exchanges between the journalist and the main accused, Thirunavukkarasu, before seizing his mobile phone for forensic analysis.

The move drew criticism from the Chennai Press Club, which accused the police of failing to follow due process and warned that such actions could have a chilling effect on journalistic independence. The organisation argued that questioning journalists over professional communications raises serious concerns about media freedom.

Meanwhile, the DMK has strongly denied any connection to the alleged conspiracy. Party leaders have dismissed the accusations as politically motivated, describing them as an attempt by the ruling TVK to divert public attention and gain political sympathy. The party has maintained that it will challenge the allegations through legal channels.

With arrests already made, senior political leaders under scrutiny, and fresh questions being raised about both political ethics and press freedom, the “Project Meghalaya” investigation has quickly become one of Tamil Nadu’s biggest political controversies. As police continue their probe, the case is expected to remain at the centre of the state’s political discourse in the coming weeks.
