Tamil superstar Vijay’s much-awaited film Jana Nayagan is once again making headlines, this time for its reported release date, CBFC certification, and the controversy surrounding its political references. Marketed as Vijay’s final film before stepping away from cinema to focus on his political career, the film has become one of the most anticipated Indian releases of the year.

According to reports, Jana Nayagan is now expected to hit theatres on July 23, 2026, although the makers are yet to make an official announcement. The speculation gained momentum after Vijay’s close associate and manager Jagadish Palani shared an Instagram story with the message, “Alright the hype is real, can’t wait for 23rd.” Fans quickly interpreted the post as a strong hint that the long-awaited release date had finally been locked.

Adding to the buzz, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has granted the film an “A” (Adults Only) certificate. The movie has a runtime of 183 minutes and 11 seconds, making it just over three hours long. However, the certification came only after the makers agreed to several changes requested by the censor board.

The CBFC reportedly asked for 12 modifications, including the removal or alteration of politically and socially sensitive content. References to Vijay’s political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), were muted or replaced in multiple scenes. Dialogues mentioning Dr. B.R. Ambedkar alongside TVK were also modified. In addition, a sequence involving the Indian national flag was removed from the final cut.

The board also directed the filmmakers to mute certain religious references, including words associated with Hindu and Christian traditions. Several strong expletives were silenced, while a disturbing visual involving a child being burned was replaced with a less graphic version. Even a character’s name, Sheela Rani, was changed throughout the film.

The film’s certification process was far from smooth. Reports suggest that Jana Nayagan was initially submitted to the CBFC in December 2025, with the makers expecting a U/A 16+ certificate. However, objections raised by a member of the examining committee resulted in the film being referred to a revision committee, delaying the certification by several months. This unexpected hurdle postponed the film’s planned January release and kept fans waiting for nearly half a year.

Directed by H. Vinoth, Jana Nayagan is considered one of the biggest projects of Vijay’s career. Made on a reported budget of ₹500 crore, the film features a star-studded cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Mamitha Baiju. Music for the film has been composed by Anirudh Ravichander, whose soundtrack is already generating massive anticipation among fans.

Beyond its commercial appeal, Jana Nayagan carries emotional significance as it is expected to be Vijay’s farewell to the silver screen before entering full-time politics. With its certification finally complete and release plans seemingly back on track, the film is poised to become one of the biggest cinematic events of 2026. Whether audiences remember it for its political themes, powerful performances, or as Vijay’s grand farewell, Jana Nayagan is already one of the year’s most talked-about films.
