West Bengal is headed for a closely watched political contest, with the latest opinion polls from Matrize and Chanakya suggesting that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) still holds a slight edge over the BJP-led alliance. The race remains competitive, but both surveys point to TMC retaining power in the 294-seat Assembly.
The Matrize numbers show just how tight the contest has become. TMC is projected at 43% vote share, while the BJP-led alliance stands close behind at 41%. The remaining 16% goes to other parties, confirming that the election is shaping up as a largely bipolar battle. In such a close race, even a small swing in voter sentiment could shift the final outcome in a big way.
Vote share remains neck and neck
The narrow gap in vote share suggests that both major camps have managed to build strong support bases across the state. TMC’s lead is slim, but it may be enough to keep the ruling party ahead in the final count if it converts votes efficiently in key constituencies. For the BJP, the figures show that it remains a serious challenger with enough strength to keep the contest highly competitive.
At the same time, the relatively modest share for smaller parties indicates that their overall influence may remain limited. Instead of fragmenting the race, voters appear to be consolidating around the two main political forces. That trend makes the fight even sharper, as the result is likely to depend on constituency-level performance rather than a broad multi-party split.
Seat projections favour TMC
The seat forecasts make the picture clearer. Matrize projects 140 to 160 seats for TMC, 130 to 150 seats for the BJP, and 8 to 16 seats for others. This suggests that while the BJP can mount a strong challenge, TMC still has the upper hand in the final tally.
Chanakya Strategies offers a similar conclusion, with TMC projected to win 155 to 165 seats, BJP-led alliance 110 to 115 seats, and others 9 to 14 seats. Even in this estimate, TMC crosses the majority mark comfortably, reinforcing its chances of continuing in power. The BJP, however, remains far from weak and is expected to maintain a solid opposition presence.
A high-stakes contest ahead
Taken together, the polls point to a state election that is competitive but not evenly balanced. TMC appears to be in a position to retain control of West Bengal, though not by a massive margin. The BJP’s numbers show that it remains firmly in contention and could still narrow the gap further if the campaign momentum shifts.
The broader message is clear: West Bengal is not heading for a one-sided election. Instead, it is likely to see a high-stakes political battle, with TMC defending its position and the BJP trying to turn a close contest into a breakthrough.
