Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday allotted the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu to the Indian National Congress, marking a notable gesture of alliance coordination ahead of the September 18 election.

In a brief statement from the TVK headquarters secretariat, Vijay said the seat had been given to the Congress as part of the TVK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu. The move is being seen as an important political signal aimed at strengthening opposition unity and consolidating ties between the two parties before upcoming electoral battles.

The announcement came a day after senior Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram met Vijay in Chennai. The meeting, which lasted for some time, sparked speculation over seat-sharing arrangements and the future direction of cooperation between the alliance partners. Although neither side officially shared details of the discussion, political circles had been expecting a major development on the Rajya Sabha election.

Sources within the alliance indicated that the Chidambaram-Vijay meeting focused on coordination and consensus-building for the Upper House contest. The decision to allot the seat to the Congress is now being viewed as a direct outcome of those discussions.

The Congress is expected to name its candidate in the coming days. Party leaders have welcomed the development, describing it as a reflection of trust and coordination within the alliance.

The Rajya Sabha poll carries political weight, as the TVK-led alliance has the numbers needed to secure victory. Along with the support of TVK legislators, the alliance has also received backing from five independent and allied MLAs who have extended their support to Vijay’s leadership in the Assembly. This has further strengthened the coalition’s position in the electoral college.

Political analysts say the move may help reinforce opposition unity in Tamil Nadu and send out a message of stability within the TVK-led front. With the election date approaching, attention is now likely to shift to the Congress nominee and the wider political implications of the seat-sharing decision.
