Ukraine and Russia exchanged overnight strikes into early Friday, killing a railway worker and injuring several others.

According to officials, Ukrainian strikes hit an apartment block in Russia’s central Tatarstan, injuring three. Kyiv also targeted oil refineries and a petrochemicals plant. Russia’s attacks on railway stations and electrical substations killed a railway worker in Ukraine’s Sumy region, said the officials.

Both countries have intensified military aggression in recent weeks, with Russia launching large-scale air attacks and Ukraine continuing to target Russian oil facilities, leading to shortages of fuel in Crimea and other locations.

Ukraine’s military said it hit Tatneft’s oil refinery TANECO in Nizhnekamsk city in Tatarstan overnight, which it described as one of the biggest in Russia with an annual design capacity of over 16 million tons.

It also said on the Telegram app that it attacked the TAIF-NK refinery in Nizhnekamsk and confirmed fire at both refineries.

The Mayor of Nizhnekamsk said the city would cancel all public events on Friday due to the threat of airstrikes. Friday also marks Russia Day, which is a national holiday in the country.

The Ukrainian military also said it targeted the Tolyattikauchuk plant in the city of Togliatti in the Samara region, which it said specialises in production of synthetic rubbers that are used for making solid fuel for missiles.

In a separate incident, a Ukrainian attack on Russia’s border region of Bryansk killed two people and injured 10 on Thursday, according to the acting regional governor.

Meanwhile, Russia launched strikes on railway stations, electrical signalling posts, and substations in Ukraine’s northern Sumy region, killing a railway worker and injuring another, according to the chief executive of Ukraine’s state railway Ukrzaliznytsia.

Russia had earlier hit a railway infrastructure in the town of Konotop in Sumy on Thursday, killing a railway worker and injuring four others.

Both Moscow and Kyiv deny intentionally attacking civilians.
