Salman Khan’s much-anticipated patriotic drama ‘Maatrubhumi’ has hit a significant hurdle after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) reportedly withheld its certification, putting the film’s release plans in serious trouble. With no censor clearance in hand, the movie cannot be released in Indian theatres, making its proposed Independence Day weekend debut increasingly uncertain.

The film has been under the scanner ever since it was announced because of its subject matter. ‘Maatrubhumi’ is based on the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, one of the most sensitive military confrontations between India and China in recent history. Salman Khan plays the role of the late Colonel B. Santosh Babu, the commanding officer of the 16 Bihar Regiment, who lost his life while leading Indian troops during the violent border clash.

Given the real life events and the continuing diplomatic sensitivity surrounding the India-China border dispute, the CBFC is reportedly examining the film with extra caution. According to reports, the certification process has been put on hold until the makers address concerns related to the film’s portrayal of the incident.

The controversy surrounding the project began even before its release. After the teaser was unveiled, several Chinese social media users criticized the film, alleging that it presents a one-sided version of the Galwan Valley clash. The criticism gained attention internationally, prompting questions to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). However, the ministry clarified that it has no role in approving or censoring films and that certification is solely handled by the CBFC.

In an effort to reduce the controversy, the filmmakers had already made one major change. The project was originally titled Battle of Galwan before being renamed ‘Maatrubhumi’. Industry insiders believe the title change was intended to shift the focus towards patriotism rather than the specific military conflict. However, despite the new title and reported edits, the film has yet to receive the mandatory clearance certificate.

The delay has also disrupted the film’s release schedule. Initially planned for an April release, Maatrubhumi was later shifted to the Independence Day weekend in August. With certification still pending, trade analysts believe the makers may once again have to postpone the release until the CBFC grants approval.

For Salman Khan, the film represents one of his most ambitious and emotionally charged projects in recent years. While fans eagerly await an official update, the movie remains stuck in limbo, with its theatrical future depending entirely on the CBFC’s final decision.
