Delhi-NCR is expected to experience a wet spell for the next three days with rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds after the IMD issued a yellow alert for Sunday. The weather change from the monsoon is expected to provide some respite from heat and improve air quality across the region.
IMD Warning & Forecast
The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for Sunday saying there will be intensified spells of thunderstorms and rain. Cloudy skies are expected through Friday and the coming days with occasional rain and drizzle beginning in the forenoon and continuing into the evening. Wind speeds may be 20-30 kmph on Friday, but stronger gusts of 30-40 kmph are likely during the two rain spells on Sunday.
Rain Pattern and Timing
Light to moderate rain, thunderstorms and lightning are likely over northwestern India in the next three days as a fresh weather system is impacting the region. Sunday’s forecast has two separate rain periods, one in the morning and one in the afternoon with possible lightning and stronger winds. Light rain may continue into tomorrow with partly cloudy to overcast skies continuing.
Monsoon Context and Impacts
The wet spell comes in the wake of the progress of the southwest monsoon that has started affecting Delhi-NCR and adjoining areas. The rainfall is likely to ease the temperatures, control the heatwave conditions and improve the city’s air quality by suppressing dust and pollution. Authorities and residents are advised to be cautious of lightning, waterlogging and gusty winds, especially during peak storm hours on Sunday.
