The sacrifices of India’s armed forces often remain known only to their families and fellow soldiers until history records their courage. More than a year after Operation Sindoor, the nation has finally learned the identities of six military personnel who laid down their lives during the high-stakes counter-terror operation. Their names have now been officially included in the Roll of Honour at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, ensuring that their bravery will be remembered for generations. The announcement marks an emotional moment for the families of the fallen heroes, whose loved ones paid the ultimate price while defending the country.
Operation Sindoor: A Defining Military Mission
Operation Sindoor was launched in May 2025 in response to the devastating terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam. The operation targeted terror infrastructure across the border in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), making it one of India’s most significant counter-terror military campaigns in recent years. While the mission’s strategic objectives and operational success were widely discussed, the identities of the personnel who lost their lives remained confidential until now. Their names have finally been made public through the government’s official Roll of Honour on the National War Memorial website.
The Six Bravehearts Who Gave Everything
The six personnel represented different branches of India’s armed forces, reflecting the joint nature of Operation Sindoor. They include Rifleman Sunil Kumar of the 4 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry, who was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra for exceptional gallantry. The list also honours Sergeant Surendra Kumar of the Indian Air Force’s 39 Wing, who received the Vayu Sena Medal posthumously. The remaining heroes are Subedar Major Pawan Kumar from Headquarters 10 Infantry Brigade, Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar of the 5 Field Regiment, Havildar Sunil Kumar Singh from the 237 Field Workshop Company, and Agniveer Mood Murali Naik of the 851 Light Regiment. Each of them sacrificed their lives while serving the nation during the operation.
A Permanent Place in the Nation’s History
The names of all six soldiers are now being engraved on Wall 3D of the National War Memorial under the 2025 Roll of Honour. This permanent tribute ensures that every visitor to the memorial will be reminded of their courage and sacrifice.
The recognition is especially significant because military operations often keep casualty details confidential for operational and security reasons. The official publication of these names now allows the nation to publicly acknowledge their contribution. One particularly moving moment came recently when the parents of Rifleman Sunil Kumar received his posthumous Vir Chakra from President Droupadi Murmu during a defence investiture ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The honour recognised his extraordinary courage in the line of duty and symbolised the gratitude of an entire nation.
Remembering Those Who Protected the Nation
The inclusion of these six names in the Roll of Honour is more than a ceremonial gesture. It serves as a reminder that every successful military mission carries immense personal sacrifice behind the scenes. As India remembers the heroes of Operation Sindoor, their stories stand as a testament to courage, duty and selfless service. Though they are no longer with us, their legacy will continue to inspire future generations of soldiers and citizens alike, reminding the nation that its freedom is safeguarded by those willing to make the ultimate sacrifice.
