Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss the ‘current regional situation’, coinciding with US President Donald Trump announcing the visit of US delegation to Islamabad on Monday for second round of talks.
As per the statements of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) through a handout reported by Dawn, Sharif discussed his recent engagements with world leaders, including those of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkiye in a telephone call with Pezeshkian.
“During their warm and cordial conversation that lasted for around forty-five minutes, the two leaders engaged in detailed exchanges on the current regional situation,” the PMO said in the handout.
Trump had announced on Sunday that American negotiators would arrive in Islamabad on Monday for peace talks with Iran.
“My Representatives are going to Islamabad, Pakistan – They will be there tomorrow evening, for Negotiations,” he said in a post on Truth Social.
Iran is yet to confirm about Tehran’s participation in the second round of talks.
The first round of talks between the US and Iran was held in Islamabad on April 11 and 12. However, it concluded without any agreement to end the conflict. President Trump’s announcement of the second round of talks is crucial in upholding the hopes of extending the two-week ceasefire expiring on Wednesday.
The PMO reported that Sharif thanked Pezeshkian for sending delegation for the first round of talks.
“The prime minister reaffirmed that, with the support of friends and partners, Pakistan would remain fully committed to its honest and sincere efforts to advance regional peace and security,” it said.
The statement also added, “President Pezeshkian thanked the PM Shehbaz and CDF Munir for Pakistan’s strong commitment to the success of the peace efforts, while affirming that relations between Iran and Pakistan would continue to grow stronger in the days ahead.”
