The United States launched a series of airstrikes on Iran on Tuesday after the downing of a U.S Apache helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran later retaliated by striking U.S military bases in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan.
According to the U.S military, the American attack on Iran began at 10:00 pm GMT on Tuesday and lasted till 1:00 am GMT on Wednesday. It called them “self-defense strikes” and a “proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression”.
Iran’s state media IRIB reported explosions on Qeshm Islan in the Strait of Hormuz and in the ports of Sirik and Jask. It subsequently reported strikes in Jask and in Bandar Abbas.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said the attacks by the United States damaged a telecommunications tower in the town of Sirik and destroyed two water tanks in the area.
U.S President Donald Trump had spoken to reporters on Monday after the NBA final that a U.S helicopter was downed in the Strait of Hormuz, with the two crew members managing to be rescued unharmed. He later posted on Truth Social on Tuesday that the United States “must, of necessity, respond to this attack”.
Iran strikes Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan
The IRGC released a statement via state media on Wednesday, claiming it attacked U.S military bases in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan in response to the attacks by Washington.
As per the statement, the IRGC launched drone attacks on the U.S Fifth Fleet in Bahrain and the Ali Al Salem airbase in Kuwait. It reportedly also launched a long-range missile strike on an airbase in Azraq, Jordan.
The IRGC said it attacked 21 U.S targets and destroyed four of them, including an F-35 fighter jet hangar at the base in Jordan. It also stated it shot down a U.S MQ-9 drone in the skies over the Iranian city of Jam.
